Alacarte

Marc Rousavy built the Alacarte app as a free app. This SERVICE is provided by Marc Rousavy at no cost and is intended for use as is. This page explains what Alacarte does with your data.

The short version

Alacarte has no accounts, no sign-up and no advertising analytics. I do not receive or store your menu photographs or dish data. The photograph you take of a menu is sent to OpenAI so it can be read, and the selected dish names and descriptions are sent to OpenAI so the pictures can be drawn. When crash reporting is enabled for a build, limited diagnostics and aggregate usage counts are sent to Sentry as described below.

Camera

Alacarte asks for camera access for one purpose: to photograph a restaurant menu. Photos are taken only when you press the shutter. Alacarte does not record video, does not use the camera in the background, and does not read your photo library.

What is sent off your device

When you photograph a menu, that photograph is uploaded to OpenAI, which reads the dishes off it and returns them as text. When you then select dishes, the name and description of each selected dish are sent to OpenAI, which returns a generated image of that dish. No location, contact details or advertising identifiers are sent. When crash reporting is enabled, the limited diagnostics described below are also transmitted.

What stays on your device

The menu photo and the generated dish images are written to the app's own cache directory on your device so they can be displayed. They are not uploaded anywhere else and are not readable by other apps. Deleting the app removes them. Your device or operating system may also clear this cache on its own.

Diagnostics and aggregate usage

Alacarte does not use advertising identifiers and does not track you across apps or websites. If crash reporting is enabled for a build, Sentry receives scrubbed crash diagnostics, app state breadcrumbs, device and operating-system information, the app version, and aggregate counts of menu scans and generated dish images. Menu photographs, generated dish images, dish names and request bodies are excluded. See the Sentry Privacy Policy.

Children

Alacarte is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

I may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page along with a new effective date.
